CHRIS RIVERA
Chris Rivera is a NYC based Mexican-American playwright, actor, and director.
As an actor Rivera has appeared in New York productions of King Lear, Romeo and Juliet, The Bacchae, Saint Joan, Oh Holy Mother of Quique, The Miss Longview Texas Drag Pageant, Michelle, and Henry VI. In New York, Rivera has also developed his own new work by originating roles in first productions and early development. In his own work he has had roles in Gender of Attraction, Modern Day Martyrdom, Back to You, and Our Own Odyssey for which he was named Best Supporting actor by FuerzaFEST. Favorite regional theatre credits include leading roles in Compleat Female Stage Beauty, Phantom Tollbooth, Vampire Lesbians of Sodom, the Night Larry Kramer Kissed Me, and Hedwig and the Angry Inch for which Chris was named Best Actor in a Musical in the Houston Area Theater Awards. Chris also has appeared in Film and Television.
As a writer, they had the great privilege of learning from and working with the late Lanford Wilson, who produced Chris' first full length play 15 Hours in the Green World at the Edward Albee Playwriting festival. Rivera cowrote Uncivil Unions, an artist response to the gay marriage debate for Unhinged Productions in Houston, Texas. Their one act plays The Body, Quick Visits, and Cash Comfort Sex have been produced in NYC by the Secret Theater, Midtown International Festival, Manhattan Rep, respectively. Their one-act play Billy’s First Birthday was produced in Leeds, England for the Gi60 festival. Sisters of Semele was produced Off-Off- Broadway by What Dreams May Co. and Queens Shakespeare in rep with The Bacchae as a prequel to the classic Greek play. Rivera’s Curse of Cassandra and Witch of the Black Forest both received staged readings from Turn to Flesh Productions in Manhattan. Rivera’s full length plays Our Own Odyssey, Gender of Attraction, and Modern Day Martyrdom were produced by The Hispanic Federations for FUERZAFest New York City from 2017 to 2019. Gender of Attraction was revived for the 2018 Edinburgh Festival. In 2020 the Hispanic Federation commissioned Rivera to create a short solo play for their Queerantine Fuerza. Turn to Flesh Productions plans to revive Our Own Odyssey in NYC post-pandemic.
Chris Rivera serves as the Artistic Director of Turn to Flesh Productions, and teaches acting privately as well as summers with the New York Film Academy.

The independent film GROUP by Original CINematic is now available on Amazon Prime. This film has been stacking up awards on the indie film circuit. The film's ensemble cast featuring Rivera has won Awards at six different film festivals for best Cast or Ensemble. Rivera and frequent artistic partner, Joe Montoya are developing two new musicals. One of Rivera's own play Our Own Odyssey , and another inspired by L. Frank Baum, The Simply Marvelous Land of Oz. . |
